Gardner’s qualifications for city council position

To the Editors:

This Tuesday, Nov. 4 you should vote for Daniel Gardner as City Council Representative because of his sincere interest and devotion to Oberlin.

His experience in the community, his drive to get things done, and his ability to coordinate diverse perspectives are valuable assets in preserving and enhancing Oberlin as a desirable place to live, work and visit.

Since graduating from Oberlin in 1989, he has given a tremendous amount to both the college and the town.

Daniel founded the Center for Service and Learning, an institution that provides hundreds of students the opportunity to work with and for the Oberlin community year after year.

His leadership did not stop there. He continued on to form the Oberlin Partnership, an effort to support community improvement in the areas of education, recreation, economic development and housing.

And the final issue that is closer to our hearts, is that he was our mentor in the founding the Oberlin Design Initiative.

This organization promotes community sustainability through project partnerships between students and community members.

Students and faculty today and into the future will continue to work
throughout the community in these institutions established by Daniel.

If elected, we are confident that he will carry this leadership forward.

Daniel holds strong relationships with a network of people and organizations of change throughout the greater Oberlin area and Lorain County. He has served as an
influential board member with Common Ground, the Lorain County Planning Commission, and the Oberlin Main Street.

As chair of the Economic Restructuring Committee, he initiated and organized the City’s effort to apply for community development block grant funds to revitalize downtown buildings.

Daniel has the proven track record that displays his ability to navigate the challenges and capitalize on the opportunities that face the Oberlin community.

The platform he has outlined in partnership with Eve Sandberg and Charles Peterson characterizes a
sensitive appreciation of the issues we face and articulates a detailed vision that will improve the lives of all Oberlin residents, for he possesses the leadership skills to make it happen. Three cheers for Daniel Gardner!
