An ExCo class taught by Debbie Dacone, that offers a contemporary understanding of what it means to be a Roman Catholic in terms of life, faith, and practice. This class utilizes The Catechism of the Catholic Church, as well as numerous articles and books written by authors of contemporary theology. Insightful for:

 

 

Religion majors;

 

 

"Nominal" Catholics;

 

 

Non-Catholics who want to know why Catholics do what they do!

Community and Growth: The Vision of L'Arche
Challenge yourself to grow within a unique model of community. Consists of three components:
1.

Academic: Independent study from a provided reading list, and class discussion around topics such as personal growth and contribution to Catholic Community, the dignity of the individual, and care of one another, with special attention to the writings of Henri Nouwen and Jean Vanier, founder of L'Arche.

2.

Ministerial Practicum: Live among an L'Arche community in Cleveland, sharing all aspects of daily life, including prayer and meals with individuals with mild developmental disabilities and their caregivers.

3.

Reflection: Demonstration of engagement with the readings and the experience, through a journal or other creative means of reflection.

       
   

Pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi
Travel on a pilgrimage with Newman students from the Diocese, January 2 - 8, 2008. Academic and reflection requirements.

Catholic Conversations: Nourishment for Mind, Body, and Soul

Lectures and discussions on topics relevant to students, to help connect faith and life. Offered as a continuation of our Sunday after-Mass meal.
