Oberlin Manti set to gnaw on prey

by Kate Renner

Things have been looking up for the Oberlin Women's Ultimate team since they returned from Spring Break. The Preying Manti did not win as many games as they had hoped at two tournaments, although they were by far the best-dressed team in attendance.

"The Spring Break tournaments were above all a learning experience," said captain Abby "Muffin" Sullivan."We definitely discovered where our weaknesses are and what we have to work on."

Nevertheless, the team played some great games at both tournaments. Highlights included a win against Middlebury College and six points scored against the nationally ranked University of California-San Diego. Sophomore Meg Ansara intimidated opponents with her horizontal defensive skills, Tori "Maxx" Johnson completed numerous points with her speedy long cuts, and Liza Bean Sapir and Susie "Leaky" Walsh gained much yardage for the team with their smooth give-and-go passes.

"The scores were not reflective of the way we played," Walsh siad."I believe that this is due in part to a lack of focus in addition to miscalculating several of the wrist movements that oft precede a successful throw."

Since they've been back in Ohio, the Manti have been working mostly on developing their offensive strategy in preparation for this weekend's Great Lakes Open tournament.

Ten other women's teams will participate in the GLO tournament, which is the largest frisbee event in Oberlin's history. Among the teams that the Manti will be up against are Ohio University, Indiana University, Notre Dame, Carnegie-Mellon, and the University of Wisconsin. There will be games going on all weekend on North Fields - fans will be enthusiastically and aggressively appreciated.
