Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide grassroots movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights, specifically those recognized in the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948.
Amnesty's mission is to undertake research and action focused not only on shining light on human rights abuses around the world, but also on preventing and ending them. The organization is independent of any government, religion, political ideology, or economic interest. It does not support or oppose any government or political system, nor does it support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights it seeks to protect, but is concerned solely with the impartial protection of human rights.
At the latest count, AI had more than 1.5 million members, supporters and subscribers in over 150 countries and territories in every region of the world. Its membership is extremely varied and although members come from vastly different backgrounds and have a great range of political and religious beliefs, they are all united by a determination to work for a world where everyone enjoys human rights.
The Oberlin College student group has a variety of interests, but in recent years, the focus has been largely on the abolition of the death penalty in the United States and around the world, another of AI's goals. The student group always welcomes new members, so if you think you may be interested, please join us at an upcoming meeting.
