Planning Your
Departure
International Student ID
If you are traveling
abroad on ALOA status, you are required to acquire the International
Student Identity Card (ISIC). Some study away programs provide
the card as part of their fees and services. The International
Student Identity Card is the standard form of ID for students
traveling abroad and is readily accepted. In addition to giving
you student discounts throughout the world on travel, accommodations,
attractions and some additional basic medical coverage, it
provides coverage for medical evacuation (up to $300,000)
and repatriation of remains (up to $25,000). The Oberlin
College Supplemental Health Insurance Policy provides coverage
for repatriation of remains up to $7,500. It also provides
coverage for medical evacuation up to a maximum of $10,000.
Many other US insurance policies do not provide medical
evacuation; this can be a crucial form of insurance
if you need to be transported to a medical facility or back
to the US for medical treatment. Please note that the
ISIC card should not be your only form of
health insurance – it is most useful for medical evacuation.
Applications for the
cards are available in the Study Away Library (Peters 205)
and in the Campus Dinning Office. Before you submit
the application, be sure to get the Registrar's Office to
put the college seal on it. Campus Dinning will be taking
the applications for the card on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
only from 8:30 am-4:00 pm. Be sure to take
your OCID with you when you take your application
to Campus Dinning. You can pick up
the card on Fridays only , from 8:30 am-4:00 pm.
If you don't pick up the card on Friday, you will have to
wait until the following Friday to pick up your card .
The cost of the card is $22.00 you can pay with cash
or a check.
The card requires a passport photo. You can get passport
photos taken at Discount Drug Mart on Leavitt Road (Rte 58). The cost is $7.99 and it takes about half an hour.
You can also order the card online at www.myisic.com
but it takes at least four weeks to receive it. It is easier and
quicker to get the card made on campus. Remember:
Some programs provide the card and it is included with
the cost of the program. If your program
provides the card, attach photocopied proof of this.
In order to
receive final approval for your ALOA application, you must
provide proof that you have the card. Please attach
to your ALOA application a photocopy of your ISIC Card.
