Health
and Safety Considerations
When Traveling Abroad
Preparation
and research are the key to having a safe and healthy experience
while away from campus.
Pre-Departure Vaccinations
It is important to make yourself aware of the different types of vaccinations and which ones you may need to travel to your destination. The CDC and WHO websites are excellent sources for this information. Which specific vaccinations you need will depend upon a number of factors including your destination, whether you will be spending time in rural areas, the season of the year you will be traveling, the length of time you will be gone, your age, health status and previous immunizations. Some vaccinations need to be delivered in multiple doses and may take weeks or months to become fully effective. Most travel vaccinations can be obtained locally at Oberlin Student Health or the Elryia City Health Department Travel Clinic . A chart of vaccination costs, services and availability at these two locations can be downloaded from the box on the right hand side of this page.
Health
Insurance
It
is imperative that you have health insurance, especially if
you are studying abroad. Some programs purchase insurance
for their participants, or make their own policy available
for purchase. There are also several options available to
you through Oberlin College. We encourage you to take this
opportunity to review your coverage with you family and make
the choice that best suits your needs.
Family Health Insurance Policy
If
you are enrolled in a family health insurance policy, check
to see that it will cover you while you are abroad or at another
institution in the U.S. Many policies cannot be used
outside the U.S. If that is the case, you can purchase
the Oberlin College Student Health Insurance, or the HTH Worldwide
HealthSelect Overseas Insurance Program.
Oberlin College Student Health Insurance Plan
If you
are enrolled in the Oberlin College Student Health Insurance
plan it can be used while you are away from campus--either
in the U.S. or abroad. If you are already enrolled in this plan, you should make sure to take your insurance card with you. Claim forms are available from the website at www.academichealthplans.com/oberlin.
If
you have questions about whether or not you are already covered
by the Oberlin College Student Health Insurance, you can check
with the Student Accounts Office (x58457) about whether or
not you are enrolled in the Student Health Insurance program.
If you purchased the insurance at the beginning of the fall
semester, then your coverage continues only until
July 31 of the academic year and may not include all of
your time on your academic leave. If you have purchased the
insurance and your leave starts in the spring and goes through
the fall of the next year, you would need to re-purchase the
insurance for the fall. A brochure with schedule of
benefits can be found on the Oberlin Student Health Website.
HTH Worldwide HealthSelect Overseas Insurance Program
Oberlin College has contracted with HTH Worldwide for a Blanket Student Accident and Sickness Insurance. This insurance offers excellent accident and sickness coverage to students who are studying abroad. The cost of the insurance is $9.00/wk or $31.00/mo for the term of coverage. A brochure with the schedule of benefits is available in the Study Away office in Peters 205 or above on this page. To enroll in this program please complete the HTH Enrollment Form available on this page. If you have questions about this insurance contact Ann Deppman at 775-8623 or Ann.Deppman@oberlin.edu for assistance during the academic year, and Ellen Sayles at 775-8540, or Ellen.Sayles@oberlin.edu for assistance during the summer months.
