Practicum in Journalism

General Guidelines

Students working for chartered campus publications (or publications sponsored by chartered student organizations or staff offices on campus) can earn 1-2 hours of credit per semester for Practicum in Journalism (EXWR 107-01). During their time at Oberlin, students can earn up to 4 hours of credit by taking any combination of 1 or 2 hours of Practicum credit, and students who serve in editor or major coordinator positions for approved publications can earn an additional 2 hours of credit (for a total of 6) toward graduation. Practicum credit can also be earned by working for a combination of approved publications, as long as all parties involved are informed of the arrangement from the beginning. All Practicum in Journalism credit is graded Credit/No Entry.

After obtaining the consent of the faculty member teaching the Practicum in a given semester, students should contact the publication(s) they have chosen to work for as soon as possible. Editors or coordinators of each publication will make all assignments, editorial decisions, and judgments as to whether or not students have fulfilled the requirements for earning credit for their publication. In order to earn credit, each student must turn in to the faculty member sponsoring the

Practicum course a completed midterm and final report of their work co-signed by the editor or coordinator of their publication by the due date. Please use the Practicum instructor's form for these reports. (Articles do not necessarily have to be published to count for credit; they only require the approval for credit of the publication's editor or coordinator.)

Editors and coordinators must also turn in final reports in order to earn credit, although their reports do not require signatures other than their own.

Midterm Reports are due October 23, 2002; the date for the Final Report is December 20.
