Semesters in Residence
Semesters in residence are calculated based on the semesters completed at Oberlin with a projection for the fall semester. That is if you have already completed 4 semesters your semesters in residence will be 6 for the fall semester. If you are on an academic leave of absence, you will receive residency credit for that leave. Transfer students may receive up to 4 semesters of residency credit depending upon their matriculation status as determined by the credit hours accepted by Oberlin College.Leaves of Absence
All Oberlin students planning to enroll for the Fall '09 semester can submit a housing request via the on line application. For housing selection, students may designate a friend or the Office of Residential Education to serve as their proxy also via the on-line application.Students who are returning from medical leaves may submit applications for housing requests; however, acceptance of the application or assignment for housing does not imply that a student will be allowed to return from leave. A separate clearance from the Medical Leave Committee is required before a student may return to campus.Withdrawn Students
Students who are withdrawn from the college cannot submit a housing request until they have completed the reinstatement process and are cleared to return.
Transfer Credit
For the housing selection process only students who entered Oberlin College as transfer students during the current academic year will receive semesters in residency credit. Students who enter with the status of new or first year student will not receive residency for transferred college or AP credits.Semesters in residency credit for transfer students at the time of matriculation are based on the table below.

Information by Semesters in Residence
- Semesters in Residence 1-3
- If your semesters in residence is between 1 and 3, you may rank only OSCA , traditional, program and special interest housing as your choices.
- It is important to realize that there are a limited number of singles available for students with 1-3 semesters in residence. Approximately 40% of these students will be housed in singles and 60% in multiple occupancy (doubles, triples, quads) rooms. It is the Office of Residential Education's recommendation that this student group carefully consider your best option.
- You may download and submit the Group Application on or before March 20, 2009. All groups are averaged by group priority--the sum of the semesters in residence and lottery numbers divided by the number of group members.
- If you do choose a single occupancy room as your first choice and do get in the initial lottery your ability to go through the multiple occupancy room selection will be delayed.
- If there are no singles available at your assigned appointment time or you are not in the lottery, you will be requested to return on Saturday, April 18, 2009 to select a multiple occupancy space. You may either find a roommate (from anyone not already assigned) or you may be paired with a roommate at that time of selection.
- Semesters in Residence 4 or 5
- If your semesters in residence are either 4 or 5 you may only rank village, OSCA and the traditional residence halls (includes program and special interest housing) as your choices.
- Semesters in Residence 6 or above
- If your semesters in residence is 6 or above you are able to rank all four housing selection preferences.
- If you rank off-campus housing as your first choice, you must still rank other choice options. Off-campus cannot be guaranteed so you must prioritize additional options.
- Please note that all eligible students are required to participate in the Early Release Process if they were on campus in the fall or on leave and had Internet access. Eligible students who miss the early deadline may still be waitlisted; however priority will be given to those students already on the waitlist who submit their request by the original deadline.
- If the number of requests for off-campus then falls below the number of off-campus spaces a third round of off-campus releases may occur based on the waitlist.
