Co-op Housing: Harkness

Harkness

The only housing Co-op to be located at the center of campus, Harkness shares a lawn with the Center for Environmental Studies. Harkness is also the largest Co-op on campus with a total of 109 students eating there, 64 of which also live in the building.

Traditionally, Harkness serves vegan and vegetarian friendly food. The building also hosts the canning and tofu-making operations for all the Co-ops. The graciously spaced lounge and lobby area are constantly abuzz with activity, from study sessions to late night dance parties and a variety of music jams. Harkness is the only hall on campus to offer a group shower option instead of individual shower stalls.

Like all Co-ops, residents share cooking, cleaning and maintenance duties. Each house member is assigned a job for the semester that requires an equitable amount of work per week. In return, students receive their housing and meals at cost. This means that any funds left over in the Oberlin Student Cooperative Association (OSCA) bank at the end of the year are returned to the students instead of kept for profit.

Any students interested in living in Harkness should make sure to fill out an application. A random lottery is held in order to determine both who will live and who will dine at Harkness.
