GAWS 100: Introduction to Gender and Women's Studies
(Prof. Frances Hasso and Shawna Hein)
We are fortunate to have Shawna Hein as the discipline-specific writing assistant for Introduction to Gender and Women’s Studies. Shawna, who did superb work in my more advanced Gender, Social Change, Social Movements course, will primarily be helping students organize and outline the three reading-based analytical essays required in GAWS 100. At times, she will also co-facilitate class and Blackboard discussions vis-a-vis course material. She will hold office hours every week and should be an invaluable resource for every student in the course. Student discussion groups can also arrange for Shawna to attend a specific meeting during the term to discuss graded essays or difficult reading material.
POLT 132: Colloquium: Explaining Social Power: Classical and Contemporary Theories
(Prof. Sonia Kruks and Lauren Stensland)
I am using a writing tutor for my colloquium for first and second year students, "Explaining Social Power." I am teaching two section of this small, discussion-based class which introduces students to the reading of political and social theory texts. My tutor, Lauren Stensland, is working with both sections. All students are required to meet with her to discuss a narrative outline or first draft as they develop their first (three-four page) paper. They will also be required to meet with Lauren again, later in the semsester, as they develop a longer final paper on a topic of their own choice.
ENGL 241: Reading Queer Futures
(Prof. Jordana Rosenberg and Kyle Strimbu)
I am thrilled to have Kyle Strimbu as a discipline-specific writing tutor for my Engl 241, Reading Queer Futures class. Kyle has been invaluable for me, as I am a visiting faculty member. He acquainted me with the Oberlin library system, student ethos, and particulars of the department before I even arrived on campus. He will meet with students to discuss papers, brainstorm writing topics, and to work on revisions. He attends class, will occasionally lead or help lead discussion, and has been a fantastic resource for the class "both the students and myself" overall.
FYSP 133: Science and the Mind
(Prof. Jan Thornton and Robin Weeks)
Robin Weeks is working with me on a First Year Seminar Program course called Science and the Mind. She does the reading assignments and attends the classes so she is very familiar with what is being taught. She and I have worked together to come up with guidelines for a Reading Response and a Reflection Paper that the students wrote. She has already met with every student in the class at least once to help them with their writing. Students have profited from both of us reading and commenting on their papers. Robin has also been actively engaged in helping to faciltate classroom discussions. She has been and continues to be a respected colleague who I can ask for advice, bounce ideas off of, and from whom I can gain better insight into the needs and concerns of the first-year students.
