Assignment 1: (Due Wednesday, 14 September.)
- Optional: Read The Strange World of Quantum Mechanics,
chapters 3, 4, and 9.
- Physics of QM problems 2.14 and 2.15.
Model Solutions 1:
Assignment 2: (Due Wednesday, 21 September.)
- Optional: Read The Strange World of Quantum Mechanics,
chapters 6, 10, and 11.
- Physics of QM problems 1.1 through 1.4, inclusive.
Model Solutions 2:
Assignment 3: (Due Wednesday, 28 September.)
- Optional: Read R.P. Feynman,
QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter, pages 1-83.
(Tips for getting the most out of this book are here.)
- Physics of QM problems 2.4 through 2.7, inclusive; and 2.16.
Model Solutions 3:
Assignment 4: (Due Wednesday, 5 October.)
- Read pages 1 through 70 of Daniel T. Gillespie,
A Quantum Mechanics Primer, which is on
reserve
(password required).
Remember that Gillespie treats only systems with an infinite number
of basis states, that he does not distinguish between a state |ψ> and
its representation ψ(x), and that he uses the notation (φ,ψ)
for what Dirac would call <φ|ψ>.
- Do the exercises in Gillespie
as you come to them, but hand in only exercises 12, 18, 26, 28, 32,
37, 38, and 39.
Model Solutions 4:
Assignment 5: (Due Wednesday, 12 October.)
Model Solutions 5:
Assignment 6: (Due Wednesday, 19 October.)
- Read Griffiths chapter 1: "The Wave Function".
- Physics of QM problems 5.1 through 5.5, inclusive.
Model Solutions 6:
Fall Break
Assignment 7: (Due Wednesday, 2 November.)
- Read Griffiths chapter 3: "Formalism".
- Physics of QM problems 6.2 through 6.5, inclusive.
(You should also look at, but not work, problem 6.1.)
Model Solutions 7:
Assignment 8: (Due Wednesday, 9 November.)
- Read Griffiths chapter 2: "Time-independent Schrödinger Equation".
- Physics of QM problems 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3, and 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3.
Model Solutions 8:
Assignment 9: (Due Wednesday, 16 November.)
Model Solutions 9:
Assignment 10: (Due Wednesday, 23 November.)
- Start reading Griffiths chapter 4: "Quantum Mechanics in Three Dimensions".
- Pay special attention to section 4.3.2: "[Position Representation of
Angular Momentum] Eigenfunctions".
- Physics of QM problems 10.2, 10.3, 10.5, and 10.6.

- Griffiths problem 4.22.
Model Solutions 12:
Assignment 13: (Due Monday, 12 December. Extra credit.)
- Read Griffiths section 5.1: "Two-particle Systems".
- Physics of QM problems 14.14, 14.15, and 14.16.
