MECHANICAL EQUIVALENT OF HEAT

APPARATUS
cardboard tube 202-11-B
two corks, one with hole 202-11-B
lead shot 202-11-B
thermometer 214-03-G1

DESCRIPTION
Measure the initial temperature of a kilogram of lead shot.  Put the lead shot in the tube and cork securely.  Invert the tube fifty times.  Replace solid cork with one-hole cork and thermometer and measure the final temperature of the lead.

N*mgh = mcpΔ T

h = 1 m
cp,Pb = 128 J/kg*K
ΔT = 3.8 K

NOTES

Use 15-40°C mercury thermometer, or better yet, the thermocouple probe with the big digital display.
