FRICTION AROUND A
ROD
APPARATUS
wooden dowel |
202-15-D |
string |
202-02-C3 |
slotted
masses |
101-05-C |
weight hangers |
101-05-D1 |
DESCRIPTION
Wrap the string several times around
the rod to show that it can support a lot more weight than is hanging
from
the other end.
The
tension
in the string increases exponentially with the number of turns around
the
rod: T1 = Toe-μθ
.
NOTES
This demonstration is used in Musical
Acoustics to illustrate why violin tuning pegs are hard to turn.
