Hang the cup and ball from a spring
scale
and determine their weight. Lower the ball into the filled
cylinder
and catch the overflow in the beaker. The difference between the
two scale readings is equal to the buoyant force. Show that this
is equal to the weight of the displaced water by pouring the overflow
into
the cup to re-establish the original reading.
NOTES
Make sure ball, cup, and
string are
initially
dry.
