HALL EFFECT

APPARATUS
p- or n-doped germanium in sample mount 214-02-C2
strong bar magnet 206
digital multimeter 214-01-B
DC power supply 214-01-D
document camera 201

DESCRIPTION
Show that a potential difference develops perpendicular to the current in a semiconductor when the magnet is brought near the sample.  Switching from N to P-type germanium reverses the sign of the transverse voltage, indicating that the charge carriers have the opposite charge.

NOTES

Connect the power supply to the P- or N-type mounted germanium wafer and set the current to 40 mA.  Connect the voltmeter across the germanium and use the potentiometer on the sample mount to zero the transverse voltage in the absence of a magnetic field.

Current should not exceed 50 mA.
