DESCRIPTION
The magnet takes longer than the
nonmagnet to fall through the tube (about 5.5 seconds as
compared to 0.5 s). The falling magnet induces currents in
the tube whose magnetic fields oppose the motion of the magnet.
NOTES
The tube can be hung from a spring
scale (by the velcro strip) to show that the magnet exerts a
force on the tube as it falls.
A similar tube with a slit along the side can be shown for
comparison.
