DIP NEEDLE

APPARATUS
dip needle 202-20-F

DESCRIPTION
Large demonstration dip needle shows inclination of earth's magnetic field.  Use needle as a compass to find the direction of the horizontal component of the earth's field.  Then orient dip needle vertically so that it lies in the north-south plane.

It would appear from the 1995 USGS magnetic field charts, that in northeast Ohio the earth's magnetic field strength is about 56 uT at an inclination of about 70°.

Or go to the National Geophysical Data Center site and enter your zip code.

NOTES
We also have a small brass dip needle.
