Director
The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life is part of the Division of Student Life and is led by a Director who is a full-time Administrative and Professional staff person of the College, reporting to the Dean of Students. The Director is responsible for the development and implementation of the Office’s goals and objectives and for the administration of the Office, including personnel, budgets, facilities, policies, procedures, reports, and records. In addition to these administrative functions, the Director serves as the campus’s primary religious leader, promoting multifaith understanding, conversation, and cooperation, educating about general religious and ethical life issues, and providing the College with ceremonial leadership and pastoral care. The Director also provides support to campus spiritual communities and individuals not served by other chaplains and chaplain affiliates, including people from non-predominant religious traditions as well as spiritual seekers and non-theists.
Chaplains
Chaplains are professional religious leaders who work on campus full time. They serve on campus by agreement between the College and their external placing agencies through the Director of the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life. Their primary responsibilities are to their particular religious communities, but through agreement with the College they also share responsibility for the multifaith and general religious, spiritual, and ethical life of the College. Through the Director of the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life they are provided official access to the campus; limited College program/professional funds; office space, equipment, and supplies; business cards; shared administrative support; an ID card; email and Internet access; and a parking pass.
Chaplain Affiliates
Chaplain Affiliates are professional religious leaders who work on campus part time. They serve on campus by agreement between the College and their external placing agencies through the Director of the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life. Their primary responsibilities are to their particular religious communities, but through agreement with the College they also share responsibility for the multifaith and general religious, spiritual, and ethical life of the College—though to a more limited degree than Chaplains. Through the Director of the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life they are provided official access to the campus; shared administrative support; an ID card; email and Internet access; and a parking pass.
Religious Life Advisors
The Director of the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life, in addition to coordinating the team of chaplains and chaplain affiliates, also coordinates a network of Religious Life Advisors—General Faculty members, community clergy, and community members who provide spiritual support, leadership development, program development, and administrative support for campus spiritual communities that do not have a designated chaplain or chaplain affiliate. |
