OCEAN American History
Principles

OCEAN (Oberlin College Educational Alliance Network) History

Principles of OCEAN American History Courses

  1. The OCEAN American History course will use a college-level text. The two-semester sequence will cover the span of American history from the 17th Century to the recent past. For block courses taught in one semester the instructors may cover a shorter period.
  2. In addition to the text the OCEAN American History course should assign 3-6 supplemental books each semester, including both primary texts, some secondary works; students should read at least one monograph during the year.
  3. During the second semester of a two semester course, the OCEAN American History course will assign a research project that includes primary source research, appropriate documentation, and bibliography. The final product may include written work, visual, web-based or power point presentations, or other formats approved by the teacher. The research projects may be completed individually or in small groups.
  4. OCEAN instructors should use a variety of modes of assessment and assign a variety of kinds of written work each semester. STudent work should include regular writing assignments to teach both content and method. Instructors may also use in-class or take-home examiniations. Students should be assigned at least four significant assessments each semester, including writing assignments and examinations (but excluding pop quizzes and reading journal assignments).
  5. OCEAN courses will have interactive discussions as a central component of their content and method. Class discussion will encourage verbal expression and independent thought.
  6. OCEAN courses will regularly discuss issues of interpretation and point of view in their analysis of assignments from the text and from supplemental readings.
  7. Instructors of the OCEAN American History course will provide a detailed syllabus of the assignments and due dates to each of their students. The syllabus should include a statement of goals, assignments, grading policies, and examination requirements. OCEAN American History syllabi will be posted on the OCEAN web page. The OCEAN American History course will include geography as a part of content and method.
  8. Oberlin College Faculty in American History will visit the OCEAN secondary faculty at their home schools at least once per course. This visit may take the form of a class presentation by the Oberlin Faculty member. OCEAN American History secondary classes should visit the Oberlin campus at least once a year. The OCEAN American History course will introduce students to the college library and to the possiblities of electronic research skills available through the internet. Instructors will try to make arrangements for such research visits two weeks in advance by calling Jackie Fortino (440) 775-8043.
  9. Students in the OCEAN American History courses will receive grades for their high school transcript but their work will be evaluated "Credit/No Entry" for Oberlin college credit. Successful completion of OCEAN American History will be recorded as 2 credits per semester for a total of 4 credits per academic year, unless presented on a block schedule for which students will receive 3 credits for the block schedule semester.
