IMMUNOCYTOCHEMICAL LOCALIZATION OF CHANGES RELATED TO SPATIAL LEARNING IN THE TELENCEPHALON OF TELEOST FISH
Anatomical studies have suggested that the dorsomedial region of the telencephalon in teleost fish might be homologous to the amygdala, and that the dorsolateral region might contain hippocampal-like areas. Following the learning of a spatial task by goldfish, an increase of agyrophilia of the nucleolar organizer region (indicating an increase in transcription) was seen in the dorsolateral but not the dorsomedial region of the telecephalon. In this project another species of teleost fish, the African Knife fish , will be used to localize regions of increased expression of proteins associated with spatial learning in mammals (e.g. CREB, PSA-NCAM) within the telecephalon.
