University of Cambridge Professor Robin Osborne to Present 2007 Charles Beebe Martin Classical Lectures at Oberlin College
February 20, 2007 -- Cambridge University Professor of Ancient History Robin Osborne will present the 2007 Charles Beebe Martin Classical Lectures at Oberlin College. Osborne will give four talks in the series "The Politics of Pictorial Representation in Early Athenian Democracy." All lectures are free and open to the public and will take place in Craig Lecture Hall.
- March 5, 7:30 p.m.: “Painted pottery and its history”
- March 6, 7:30 p.m.: “The politics of war”
- March 8, 7:30 p.m.: “Athletes and the politics of desire”
- March 9, 4:30 p.m.: “Pots and politics”
Osborne’s lectures will explore Athenian pottery painted in the red figure style as a source for the social and political history of Athens between 520 and 450 BCE. Osborne will address topics such as the validity of Athenian pots found in Italy as a source for Athenian history, the political implications of portraying soldiers and athletes, and the political history of gender and sexuality. This rich topic will contribute to our understanding not only of Athenian art, but also of its place in the social history of the world’s first democracy.
Osborne’s many books and articles have helped redefine the way that scholars approach the topic of Athenian social history. He is one of very few scholars who has published on virtually all aspects of ancient Greek life, and who has integrated interpretation of the visual arts with the study of literature, legal sources, and religious practice. He has been an advocate for the use of art from all registers – from museum masterpieces to pieces produced for everyday use – as evidence for shifts in social roles, ideas, and institutions.
Professor Osborne holds a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D in Classics from the University of Cambridge. In 2006, he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy.
