Documentary Film Maker Explores China Through Folk Songs Meera Jaffrey and James Ivory in Oberlin for Screening
March 23, 2007 -- Meera Jaffrey '82 will be in Oberlin on April 5 for a screening of her documentary film, "Fine Rain: Politics and Folk Songs in China." After the screening there will be a question and answer session with Jaffrey and the film’s producer, James Ivory, of the Merchant and Ivory Foundation. The screening will begin at 8:00 p.m. in the Science Center’s West Lecture Hall and is free and open to the public.
The film spotlights the history and politics of China from pre-Communism to the Cultural Revolution through the country's folk songs, many of which were forbidden to be sung in public under the tenure of the late Chinese leader Mao Zedong. The film includes archival footage of live performances, photographs, and interviews.
In 2004, Jaffrey received a grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation to embark on a project to educate the public on the value of preserving Chinese folk songs. Producer Ismail Merchant heard about Jaffrey's project and invited her to China—where he was on location for the film The White Countess—to continue her studies and to make the documentary. Merchant, along with his film making partner James Ivory, provided funding for the documentary. They had produced such classics as A Room with A View and Howard's End, but Merchant would not live to see the film completed, as he passed away in May 2005.
