January 31, 2006Oberlin College will celebrate Black History Month with a performance by The Soweto Gospel Choir Monday, February 20 at 8 p.m. in Finney Chapel, located on the corner of West Lorain and N. Professor Sts. The third event in the College's 2005-2006 Convocation Series, the concert is free but seating is limited and tickets are required. A maximum of four per household may be obtained by sending a SASE to Oberlin College Central Ticket Service, Hall Auditorium, 67 N. Main St., Oberlin, OH 44074. The stunning vocal ensemble was formed to celebrate the unique and inspirational power of African Gospel music and is dedicated to sharing the joy of faith through music with audiences around the world. It is known for performing an inspirational program of tribal, traditional, and popular African gospel in eight different languages. Named for the township outside of Johannesburg, the 26-member choir draws on the best talent from the many churches and communities in and around Soweto. Under the direction of choirmaster David Mulovhedzi and South African executive producer Beverly Bryer, the choir began touring internationally in early 2003 to nightly standing ovations, sold-out houses, and rave reviews and is currently on a three-month tour of the United States with a program that includes acrobatic dancing and brilliantly colored traditional costumes.
