OBERLIN COLLEGE FOCUSES HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORTS ON DILLARD UNIVERSITY |

September 12, 2005Oberlin College is reaching out to assist Dillard University, a historically black college in New Orleans that was devastated by hurricane Katrina. Oberlin's senior administration has pledged at least $10,000 to begin the fundraising effort and President Nancy S. Dye has asked College faculty, staff, alumni, students, and friends of the College to provide their support. The Oberlin plan was formed after communications last week between President Dye and Dr. Michael Lomax, president of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). The UNCF has set up a hurricane relief fund to benefit the historically black schools that have been devastated by Katrina. "Dillard will need help for the foreseeable future restoring its campus for the eventual return of its students," says President Dye. "For the moment, other schools have taken in Dillard students, and local relief agencies are providing emergency food and shelter. Dr. Lomax has made it very clear to us that the best way to help is to donate money to the rebuilding effort. I have great faith that Dillard can count on Oberlin's generosity and support." Founded in 1869, Dillard's small campus is famous for its beauty and its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Due to the breach in the 17th Street Canal levee nearby, the campus has been severely damaged by floodwaters. The school's 2,000 students have been evacuated, and the administration and faculty are working day and night to rebuild and eventually reopen the entire campus. "We ask that contributions be made through the College," says President Dye. "We will promptly forward the funds to the UNCF, which will earmark our donations for Dillard and ensure that the funds will reach the university in its time of need."
