THE OBERLIN CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC APPOINTS ANDREA KALYN ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

February 14, 2005—Dean of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music David H. Stull has appointed Andrea Kalyn as associate dean of the conservatory for academic affairs, effective January 4, 2005. Kalyn joins Oberlin after serving four years as assistant dean and musicologist at the North Carolina School of the Arts.

"Andrea brings a wealth of administrative and teaching experience to this position," says Stull. "Her energy, musicianship, and extensive professional background will serve Oberlin extraordinarily well in the coming years. I am very pleased she has joined our staff."

Kalyn earned her PhD in musicology from the Eastman School of Music; her scholarship focuses on American music of the 20th century. Her bachelor's and master's degrees, also in musicology, are from the University of Western Ontario. She also holds an ARCT in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Kalyn has published articles on the composers Howard Hanson and Daniel Gregory Mason, and has presented papers on the chamber music of Brahms and Schubert, among others.

At Oberlin Kalyn will oversee curricular development and program evolution, and will also assist the dean with matters associated with managing the Conservatory.

"I'm honored to be at Oberlin," says Kalyn. "The Conservatory is a remarkable place. The students are among the best in the country, and I'm looking forward to getting to know them and helping them meet their academic goals. The artists and scholars on the faculty are also second to none--it will be a professional as well as a personal joy to work with them."

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865 and situated within the intellectual vitality of Oberlin College since 1867, is the oldest continuously operating conservatory in the United States. It is renowned internationally as a professional music school of the highest caliber, and its alumni have gone on to achieve illustrious careers in all aspects of the serious music world. Numerous Oberlin alumni have attained stature as solo performers, composers, and conductors, among them Jennifer Koh, Steven Isserlis, Denyce Graves, Franco Farina, Lisa Saffer, George Walker, Christopher Rouse, David Zinman, and Robert Spano. All of the members of the contemporary music ensembles eighth blackbird and the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) are Oberlin graduates, and members of the Miró, Pacifica, Juilliard, and Fry Street quartets, among others, include Oberlin alumni, who can also be found in major orchestras and opera companies throughout the world.
