OBERLIN COLLEGE ARCHIVIST NAMED TO PRESTIGIOUS BOARD

February 23, 2005—Roland M. Bauman, director of the Oberlin College Archives and a founding member of the Academy of Certified Archivists, has been named to a three-year term on the Board of Publications of the Society of American Archivists.

To assume board responsibilities, Baumann will step down in March from the Ohio Historical Records Advisory Board   (OHRAB) after 18 years "of outstanding service," according to William K. Laidlaw, Jr., executive director of the Ohio Historical Society.

Baumann served six terms on the OHRAB under appointment by Ohio's governors, the most for any board member. During his tenure, Baumann served on many subcommittees and was the principal author of the 1995 state records plan titled "The Ohio 2003 Plan: A Statement of Priorities and Preferred Approaches for Historical Records Programs in Ohio."

Laidlaw recently presented Baumann with a certificate of appreciation for "his remarkable contributions to the archival profession," and for "demonstrating an untiring commitment to providing the public with access to archival records and historical documents."

Established in 1974, O.H.R.A.B. reviews grant submissions submitted by Ohio archival manuscript repositories to the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in Washington, D.C., and serves in an advisory capacity to the Archives-Library Division of the Ohio Historical Society.

Baumann became director of the Oberlin archives in 1987. He is also an adjunct professor of history at the College and a part-time faculty member at Kent State University's graduate School of Library and Information Science.

In 1989, in accordance with an agreement between the Main Archival Administration of the USSR Council of Ministers and the Commission on Soviet-American Archival Cooperation of the American Council of Learned Societies, Baumann visited the Soviet Union to discuss the appraisal and accessioning practices of Soviet archives.
