October 1, 2004--The venerable British composer Sir Harrison Birtwistle, creator of such works as the monumental lyric tragedy The Mask of Orpheus, will be in residence at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music May 1-10, 2005.
Sir Harrison's May residency is the culmination of a year of concerts and master classes by renowned musicians and composers that also includes residencies by pianist Russell Sherman and percussionist Steven Schick, as well as a mini-festival of composer Daniel Pinkham's work.
Here is a calendar listing of guest artists scheduled to appear at Oberlin through December 2004. Please note that this does not include complete information for the Artist Recital Series, a paid subscription series. The British harpsichordist Christopher Stembridge performs on the cembalo cromatico, an early 17th-century "experimental" harpsichord with 19 notes per octave. Mr. Stembridge's instrument is a reproduction made by Willard Martin of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Mme. Langlais, professor of organ at the Paris Conservatory, will conduct a master class on the music of the organist-composers of St. Clotilde, the 19th century Paris church known as the most important church musicsite in France.
NOVEMBER 4 - 7: Russell Sherman, Artist-in-Residence
Called "one of the truly extraordinary pianists" by The New York Times, Russell Sherman continues to garner accolades from critics and audiences alike for his grace, imagination, and poetry. The 2004-05 season marks his 75th birthday and the 60th anniversary of his professional debut in New York at age 15. The division of keyboard studies sponsors his Oberlin residency.

NOVEMBER 17 - 21 Steven Schick Residency
Percussionist Steven Schick has championed contemporary percussion music as a performer and teacher for the past 20 years. He has commissioned and premiered more than 100 new works for percussion and has performed these pieces on major concert series such as Lincoln Center's Great Performers and the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Green Umbrella concerts. He has recorded many of these works for SONY classical, Wergo, Point, CRT, and Neuma Records. Schick is the percussionist of the Bang on a Can All-Stars. The New Music Division of the Contemporary Music Program sponsors his residency.
