COMMUNITY SERVICE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT ON VIEW AT OBERLIN COLLEGE

October 13, 2004—To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Oberlin's Center for Service and Learning (CSL), a multi-media exhibit chronicling community engagement at the College is on view in Mudd Learning Center now through Friday, October 29.

Titled faces/spaces: leaders in the community service, the exhibit includes black and white photographs of 13 College and community members extraordinarily committed to service. The photographs are accompanied by interviews documenting the individuals' history of service and their feelings about the College's relationship with the community.

Free and open to the public, the exhibit also will be on view in several locations in Oberlin and the surrounding vicinity during the year as well as available to groups wishing to display the photograph collection. For more information, contact Beth Blissman, director of the Center for Service and Learning: (440) 775-8055. Mudd Learning Center is located in Wilder Bowl, south of the College's Student Union at 135 West Lorain St.

Created by photographer/filmmaker Jenny Rushlow '04 and historian/ documentarian Michelle Sharkey '04, the project also includes The Center for Service and Learning, a digital video documentary explaining the CSL's purpose and goals and investigating student understanding of Oberlin's historical commitment to community involvement.

The Oberlin College Center for Service and Learning works in partnership with the surrounding community to link students with educational service opportunities. Community service, advocacy, grassroots organizing, and applied research are the norm at Oberlin, where each year more than 55 percent of Oberlin undergraduate students do some form of curricular or co-curricular community service.
