FOUR TO RECEIVE HONORARY DEGREES AT OBERLIN COLLEGE’S 170th COMMENCEMENT

MAY 5, 2003---Oberlin College will confer honorary degrees upon four distinguished persons in the fields of music, history, and journalism during its 170th Commencement Monday, May 26, on Tappan Square.

  • Commencement speaker Anthony Lewis, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner for national reporting and a distinguished civil rights activist, will receive the Doctor of Humanities degree;
  • Sylvia Olden Lee '38, celebrated accompanist and vocal coach renowned as the teacher and inspiration for countless singers, including Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman, and the first African-American professional with the Metropolitan Opera, will receive the Doctor of Music degree;
  • Edward H. Tarr '57, virtuoso trumpet soloist, prolific musicologist, and a pioneer in the reintroduction of historical brass instruments, will receive the Doctor of Music degree; and
  • Historian and internationally renowned activist Romila Thapar, emeritus professor of history at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, will receive the Doctor of Humanities degree.

Oberlin will also confer two special awards.

Community leader and civil rights activist Ruby Jones, founder of the Oberlin Community Youth Scholarship Fund, will receive the College's annual award for distinguished service to the community. Bayard W. Lyon '42, a longtime Oberlin supporter and volunteer, will be awarded the Alumni Medal in recognition of his outstanding service to the College and its extended community.
