JUNE 24, 2003--Teenagers from as far away as Australia are coming to Oberlin next month for a new soccer camp headed by Brad Friedel, goalkeeper for the U.S. National Soccer Team and the U.S. hero at the 2002 World Cup Competition. "I am looking forward to returning to Ohio every summer to work with young American players and give back to the communities that helped me to get to where I am today," says Friedel in a press release announcing the academy. Friedel, goalkeeper for the Blackburn (England) Rovers, played for the Columbus Crew in 1996 and 1997 and grew up in nearby Bay Village. "I will be involved hands-on every day on the field, as will my other staff members," he says. Approximately 100 teens attending Friedels Performance Sports Academy July 7 through 11 will be among some 15,000 visitors from 13 countries expected to take part in a wide range of summer workshops, annual meetings, and festivals coordinated by the Colleges Office of Conference Services. Also new to the campus this summer, the National Women's Martial Arts Federation will hold a training camp for an estimated 350 participants July 17 through 20, and the U.S. Performing Arts Musical Theatre Camp, from June 22 through 27, will provide teenagers a professional foundation for performing. "We are also eagerly anticipating the return of the three-week Summer Institute for the Gifted from July 27 through August 16," says Conference Services staff member Heidi Chambers. "Recreational, social, cultural, artistic, creative, and athletic activities are integral components of the academic program, which is designed to maximize the talents and skills of gifted students." This weekend the Scottish American Cultural Society of Ohio will hold its annual two-day gala. Events include a dinner, a parade, competitive events in the traditional Scottish arts, demonstrations of the traditional arts of the British Isles, displays of historical significance, entertainment, and the sale of imported British wares. The following week 400 participants will mark the 25th anniversary of the Ohio Scottish Arts School. Also returning this summer will be the Socialist Workers Party Conference, the Shooting Stars Basketball camps, "Yes, I Can" Volleyball, Access Program, Universal Cheerleaders, the Ohio Association of Student Councils, and the Yellow Ball Tennis Camps. In addition, annual summer workshops and institutes hosted by the Conservatory of Music offer a full roster of concerts, recitals, and other events--most of them free--for visitors and locals alike. The Conservatorys summer programs include the String Getaway Weekend, the Baroque Performance Institute, the Workshop in Electronic and Computer Music, the Oberlin Piano Competition and Festival, the Stringed Instrument and Bow Restoration workshops, the Oberlin Flute Institute, the Institute of Vocal Performance Pedagogy, and the Vocal Academy for High School Students.
