DECEMBER 18, 2003Mentoring is the focus of ARTISTS choose ARTISTS, a Cleveland exhibition conceived by Oberlin College Young-Hunter Professor of Art John Pearson to showcase the unique connection between young artists and their teachers. Ten major artists from Northern Ohio each selected a young or relatively unknown artist to partner with them in the show. Pearson worked with studio art majors David Brown '04 and Madeline Stern '04. "The collection, which includes more than 100 drawings, sculptures, textiles, glassworks, and photographs, illustrates the sometimes subtle, sometimes dramatic but always dynamic interplay between student and mentor," says Pearson. "David and Madeleines works act as good anchors in the show," Pearson says. "They are very different in their approach and represent two interesting points of view, attitudes not represented in the exhibition. Davids work is extremely conceptual while Madeleines piece is realistic."
Joining Pearson in the show are established artists Audra Skoudas, Martin Ball, Isabel Farnsworth, Patrick Kelly, Craig Lucas, Michael Loderstedt, Ken Nevadomi, Paul OKeefe, and Doug Sanderson, as well as eight of their students. The works are on view at the Oberlin College Gallery and Performance Space at Here Here and the Bonfoey Gallery. The show, which runs through December 31, is free and open to the public. Pearson curated the exhibition at OC Here Here Gallery, at 1305 Euclid Avenue. It is open Mondays through Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Marcia Hall curated the show at The Bonfoey. She is the director of the Bonfoey, which is at 1710 Euclid Avenue. It is open Monday through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. |
