Honey in the Rock Performs October 14
Sweet
Honey in the Rock, a grammy award-winning female a cappella ensemble,
will perform at 8 P.M. October 14 in Oberlin's
Finney Chapel as part of the College's 2001-2002 Convocation Series.
The event, while free and open to the public, requires tickets to ensure
seating. Tickets can be picked up at the Central Ticket Service, located
in the lobby of Hall Auditorium on Route 58, or at the main desk in
the Wilder Student Union.

of Theology Lectures on J.R.R.Tolkien Tuesday, October 9
Ralph
Wood, a professor of theology and literature at Baylor University in
Waco, Texas, will lecture at Oberlin College Tuesday, October 9, at
4:30 P.M. in Wilder 101. Wood's free, public lecture,
"The Tragic and Redemptive in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the
Rings," will look at the examples of impending doom and heroism
found within Tolkien's saga and relate its message to our own time.
His campus visit is sponsored by the Office of the Chaplains.

Richard Goode Performs October 9
On
Tuesday, October 9, pianist Richard Goode will perform at Oberlin College's
Finney Chapel. The concert, scheduled to begin at 8:00 P.M.,
is part of the Oberlin Conservatory's Artist Recital Series. Tickets
for the event are available through the Central Ticket Service's 24-hour
reservation line at 440-775-8169.

Student Pages Make Their Debut
Starting
this semester, Oberlin Online's student pages will feature new articles
written by Oberlin college students for the student community. The site
will include personal essays, interviews with varsity athletes, a weekly
student poll and journal entries that will change on a frequent basis.

October 11 Leslie Korein's production of the 1998 drama The Dying
Gaul debuts in Little Theater. The production, for mature audiences
only, will run through Sunday,

and Visual Arts College Fair Comes to Oberlin October 10
The National Association
for College Admission Counseling will sponsor a
Performing and Visual Arts College Fair Wednesday, October 10, from
7:00 to 9:00 P.M. at Oberlin College. Students
interested in continuing their education in the areas of music, dance,
theater, visual arts, graphic design or other related fields are invited
to attend the fair in the Root Room of the College's Carnegie Building.

Addresses Career Options in Finance
Liam
Stokes '84 will hold an informal discussion with students Thursday,
October 11, at 7:30 P.M. in the Rice Faculty Lounge
to talk about career options in finance. Stokes, who is a principal
of structured capital markets with the Bank of America, will discuss
the necessary skills for different types of jobs in the field of finance
today. His presentation is sponsored by the Office of Career Services
and the Economics Department.

Guatemalan Union Activist Speaks at Oberlin College
October 11
Manuel
Zetino, a member of the Guatemalan labor federation FESTRAS, will speak
at Oberlin College Thursday, October 11, at 7:30 P.M.
Zetino's free, public lecture will take place at La Casa Hispánica
(Harvey House), and will examine the recent attacks against union supporters
in Guatemala and the fight against labor abuses in that country. His
campus visit is sponsored by The
Oberlin Santa Elena Project of Accompaniment (SEPA).

Memorial Lecture Looks at Poetry and Police in Eighteenth-Century Paris
Robert
Darnton, Shelby Cullom Davis Professor of European History at Princeton
University, will speak at Oberlin College Thursday, October 11, at 4:30
P.M. in King 106. A prolific author, Darnton's
scholarship explores French social, cultural, and intellectual history
of the eighteenth century. His free, public lecture is sponsored by
the Harold Jantz Memorial Lectureship Committee.

'99, a student at Union Theological Seminary and a prison chaplain in
lower Manhattan, reflects on the aftermath of September 11 in New York
City and across the Nation.

College Hosts Annual Asian Pacific American Conference
Oberlin College will
host the annual National East of California Asian-American
Conference this weekend, October 12-14. The conference, which will consider
the
contours and practices of Asian Pacific American communities and scholarship
east
of California, will include presentations by Oberlin alumni and faculty
memebers.

Barney Frank Speaks at Oberlin College October 13
Longtime
Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank will deliver a lecture entitled
"America and the World" tomorrow at 8:00 P.M.
in lecture hall A162 at the Oberlin College Science Center. Frank will
speak at Oberlin as part of the newly established Cole Distinguished
Lectureship in Electoral Politics Series.

String Quartet and Peter Takács Perform in Faculty Recital
The St. Petersburg
String Quartet and pianist Peter Takács will perform this Saturday
at 8:00 P.M. in Finney Chapel. The concert will
be broadcast live on WCLV, 104.9 FM, Cleveland's classical music radio
station-- marking the first time in the 39-year history of the station
that a chamber music concert has been broadcast live from Oberlin.

George McKinney Will Speak at Oberlin College October 14
Bishop George McKinney, founder and pastor of St. Stephen's Church of
God in Christ (COGIC), will speak on "Grace for
Another Year " at Oberlin College's Vesper services Sunday, October
14, at 4 P.M. in Fairchild Chapel. A reception
in Wilder 112 will follow the service.

Chaon Reads from New Works October 15
Dan
Chaon, assistant professor of creative writing, will read from his new
collection of stories, Among the Missing, Monday, October 15,
at 7:30 P.M. in King 106. Chaon, who recently
has been nominated for the National Book Award in Fiction, has had his
work published in many journals and anthologies, including The Best
American Short Stories and The Pushcart Prize, and has been
translated into several languages.
