Monday: Shansi: Something to Write Home About
In a trendy fish restaurant on the slopes of volcanic Mt. Rafi in Indonesia, Dan Wilder '99 began his two-year experience abroad, eating a fish head. "The eyeballs were pretty tasty," he says. Wilder spent two years in Yogyakarta, on the island of Java, Indonesia, studying Indonesian and teaching English as part of Shansi’s Postgraduate Fellowship Program.

Monday: Oberlin Conservatory Presents Concert for Local Families October 6
On Saturday, October 6, at 11 A.M., the Oberlin Conservatory will present a free children's concert for area students ( grades K-12) and their families. The event will feature the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Paul Polivnick, and will be followed by a luncheon sponsored by Families Yes! The concert will take place at Finney Chapel; the luncheon that follows will be at Oberlin's First Church.

Members of the college faculty are published and exhibit new artworks.

Tuesday: Obies Leave for D.C.
Eight vans filled with Oberlin College students left Wilder Bowl Friday night for a peace rally in Washington, D.C., that protested the U.S. military's response to terrorism. More than 200 students from Oberlin attended the Saturday rally, which included speeches at Freedom Plaza and a march to the capital building.

Tuesday: Author and Environmental Activist Edward Gomez Lectures at Oberlin October 3
Edward Gomez will present two free, public talks Wednesday, October 3, at the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies. Gomez--an author, graphic designer, art and design critc and environmental activist--will lecture as part of the Visiting Artist and Scholarship Series sponsored by the Oberlin College Art Department and the Allen Memorial Art Museum. His presentations will address "The Politics of the Environment: The Hudson River" at 12:45 P.M. and "Critical Issues in Contemporary Art" at 4:35 P.M.

Tuesday: Pianist Richard Goode Performs at Oberlin October 9
On Tuesday, October 9, pianist Richard Goode will perform at Oberlin College's Finney Chapel. The concert, scheduled to begin at 8:00 P.M., is part of the Oberlin Conservatory's Artist Recital Series. Tickets for the event are available through the Central Ticket Service's 24-hour reservation line at 440-775-8169.

Wednesday: Oberlin College Football Team Sets Three Records Against Wabash Last Saturday
The Oberlin College football team set three school records in its contest with Wabash College on Saturday. Despite losing to the Little Giants 56-26, the Yeomen set team records for yards passing in a game with 405 and for total offense with 530 yards. The previous record for yards passing was 342 set against Earlham College in 1999, while the previous record for total offense was 497 yards set against The College of Wooster in 1950. Rick Valenzuela (pictured above), a junior wide receiver from Manteca, California, set the school record for yards receiving in a game with 239. Valenzuela caught nine passes and had a season-high three touchdowns. The previous record, held by Rollie Schick, was 220 yards against Hiram College in 1978. Valenzuela currently leads the team and North Coast Athletic Conference with 10.0 receptions and 181.2 yards per game.

Wednesday: Dean of Georgetown's School of Foreign Service Lectures October 4
Robert Gallucci, the dean of Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, will lecture at Oberlin College tomorrow, October 4, at 4:30 P.M. in the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies. Gallucci, who has served the State Department as an ambassador-at-large and who negotiated the accord over nuclear reactors that averted a confrontation between North Korea and the United States, will lecture on "The National Security: Challenges of Priorities and Negotiation." Gallucci's campus visit is sponsored by the Politics Department and the Richard R. Hallock Foundation.

Wednesday: Performing and Visual Arts College Fair Comes to Oberlin October 10
The National Association for College Admission Counseling will sponsor a Performing and Visual Arts College Fair Wednesday, October 10, from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. at Oberlin College. Students interested in continuing their education in the areas of music, dance, theater, visual arts, graphic design or other related fields are invited to attend the fair in the Root Room of the College's Carnegie Building.

Thursday: International Chess Master Goes 30-1 Against Oberlin Students
International chess master Calvin Blocker came to Oberlin last Friday to play a simultaneous exhibition against any and all challengers. As part of the promotional effort, one thousand dollars was offered in prize money to any challenger who could beat Blocker. The high stakes were intended to attract a large group of participants and spectators. In past contests, nobody has defeated the international chess master, but that is exactly what Jonathan Hirsch '05 did during this year's competition.

Thursday: Calvin Hernton, Emeritus Professor of African American Studies, Dies
Calvin Hernton, emeritus professor of African American Studies, died Sunday, September 30 after a long struggle with cancer. Funeral arrangements will be private and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Friday: A&S Admit Rate Improves; One of Oberlin’s Strongest Classes Enrolls
The class of 2005 represents the best-ever admissions year for Oberlin's College of Arts and Sciences. Six hundred twenty-four new freshmen were selected from an applicant pool of 457--Oberlin's largest. Friday: Oberlin College Hosts Annual Asian Pacific American Conference October 12-14
Oberlin College will host the annual National East of California Asian-American Conference the weekend of October 12-14. The conference, which will consider the contours and practices of Asian Pacific American communities and scholarship east of California, will include presentations by Oberlin alumni and faculty memebers.

Friday: Congressman Barney Frank Speaks at Oberlin College October 13
Longtime Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank will deliver a lecture entitled "America and the World" Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 8:00 P.M. in lecture hall A162 at the new science center. Frank will speak at Oberlin as part of the newly established Cole Distinguished Lectureship in Electoral Politics Series.

Friday: Memorial Service for Emma Howell (1981-2001)
A memorial service will take place Saturday, October 6, for Emma Howell, an Oberlin student who was killed this past June in a swimming accident. The service will begin at 7:00 P.M. in Fairchild Chapel and will continue with a candlelight procession to The Cat in the Cream Coffeehouse.
