Each year, mathematics-department faculty members create mathematical displays for the glass case outside the department office. Recently, mathematics-department faculty members have taken turns suggesting engaging and user-friendly displays. Two years ago the display case had a geometric theme, including geometric solids created--with the children's toy Zometool--by Susan Colley, professor of mathematics; Michael Henle, professor of mathematics; Robert Bosch, associate professor of mathematics; and Colley's 7-year-old-daughter Diane. Last year the display featured several novel applications Bosch developed to explain integer-programming methods. The new exhibit has six separate computer programs, including Julia Sets and Fractals, which created the images on the main-story page. |
