A CAMPAIGN TO RAISE $165 MILLION |
|
Oberlin, Ohio -- Oberlin College President Nancy Dye formally announces "The New Oberlin Century," a campaign to raise approximately $165 million. The largest fund-raising effort in Oberlin's history, more than $72 million has already been raised. Within this total are commitments from the entire Board of Trustees and the Executive Board of the Alumni Association. In addition, the latter group has unanimously passed a resolution of support for the objectives of the campaign. The goals of this five-year effort include strengthening the endowment for faculty salaries and student scholarships; funding major building and renovation needs, including a new science center that will allow the College to more fully integrate research into the curriculum; to enhance Oberlin's academic programs; and to increase the level of annual giving to the College. Assuming the responsibilities of co-chairs for The New Oberlin Century are Thomas J. Klutznick '61, Joan L. Danforth, and William L. Robinson '63. Oberlin's long-standing traditions of equity, excellence, and generosity have inspired Robinson to undertake this leadership role. "The campaign objectives, when fully funded, will help ensure that Oberlin retains its position as one of the premier liberal arts colleges and one of the most eminent conservatories in the United States." Strengthening relationships between Oberlin and the people whose lives have been touched by the College is one of the main reasons Klutznick has taken on this new challenge. "I want this campaign to reach out and touch every Oberlinian, to strengthen the ties and relationships, to make them proud to be associated with Oberlin College." The Oberlin ethos of social engagement has been an important influence in Klutznick's life. "In my line of work, it's possible to see only the upscale and the glamorous," he said. "It would be easy for me to overlook the pressing problems of crime, lack of opportunity, drug abuse, and general deterioration of the inner cities in this country. But I can't. I have to be involved, to work to make a difference in this world. It's a philosophy that was instilled in me at Oberlin." Danforth realizes the outcome of this campaign will allow Oberlin to position itself as one of the leading liberal arts institutions in the 21st century. "This is a very exciting time in Oberlin's history--the most ambitious fund-raising effort the College has ever undertaken. It is important that we continue to support the College's efforts to bring together the brightest young minds, regardless of financial resources, with the world's leading educators. The collective efforts of this campaign will enable Oberlin to preserve its rich tradition of educating a culturally diverse student body that believes it can make a difference now and in the future." |
