A Sampling of Works from Evocations and Forgotten Places

Text by Marci Janas

Back to Main Story

OCTOBER 1, 1999--Muted turquoise. Carnelian. The pink found inside conch shells. "My colors are always very symbolic," Skuodas says. Because her paintings deal with the spirit, or notions of the spirit--"pathos turned into ethos" turned into transcendence--they "are about transparency. They have that immateriality. My paintings are so thin, there's so little paint on them . . . they don't shout. They're quiet. You have to come to them."

The works identified by titles are those in the Fisher Hall exhibit. Unidentified works are other recent paintings.

The Soul Recognizing Itself in All Things, 1999, acrylic on birch, 48"x54"

Ecstasy--Dance of the Individual with the All, 1999, acrylic on canvas, 60" x 60"
