The Construction of the Adam J. Lewis Center for Environmental Studies,
May 4, 1999

Photographs by Holly Matyas
Text by Linda Grashoff based on information from Leo Evans

The larger holes in the brick wall under the atrium balcony will fit air-cooling ducts, and the smaller holes will fit piping for the geothermal water supply and return and the sprinkler system.

The living-machine area is now open to the weather, but next month it will be fitted with a skylight.

Doors will fit the opening at the first-floor level of the brick wall, and a window will go in the second-floor opening, both giving out to the atrium in the foreground.

The saw horses on the roof are where the carpenters were cutting wood supports for under the gutter. In October this roof will look completely different. Not only will it be covered by a standing-seam metal roof, but the metal roof will have installed on top of it an array of photovoltaic cells to generate electricity.
