Greenhouse Giveaway: Plants Move Over for New Science Center Text and photographs by Linda Grashoff |

JULY 16, 1999--Until this coming Tuesday, July 20, green-thumb owners may help themselves to plants that won't be moving from the current biology-department greenhouse to the temporary greenhouse on north campus. By the end of summer, the greenhouse will be demolished so that construction of the new science center can begin. The giveaway plants--on the sidewalk outside the east wall of the greenhouse--are not labeled, and do not come with watering instructions; many need repotting. New plants and cuttings will be put out for the taking sporadically through Tuesday. |

Soon to be no more: bulldozers will have at the biology-department greenhouse in August as construction begins for the new science center. Many of the plants it now houses will move to temporary quarters near the grounds-department office. Others are finding new homes in Oberlin. |

The east side of the
greenhouse looked like this yesterday afternoon. Between
today and next Tuesday, July 20, other plants--mostly cacti
and philodendra--will find their way here. Anyone with a
green thumb is welcome to give the plants a new home. |

The bougainvillea will become a casualty of the greenhouse demolition. Its roots--in the soil underneath the greenhouse--are too extensive to allow its transportation to the temporary quarters. |
