The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus

Presentation Politics: Oberlin Students Are Real-World Consultants

In order to be more inclusive, in 1996 the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) opened its membership to African-American legislators of any political party. Before 1996 the OLBC was known as the Black Elected Democrats of Ohio, and it was founded in 1967.

It was established, according to an OLBC pamphlet that commemorates the First Annual African-American Legislator's Day Celebration on February 17, 1999, "in recognition of the hopes, aspirations, and the needs of African Americans in Ohio." Its mission is "to promote, foster and sponsor educational, civic and political activities throughout the state and communities, through the efforts of its members."
