Caroline Jackson Smith: Staging the Familiar
|
DECEMBER 20, 1999--Since joining Oberlin's faculty in 1989, Caroline Jackson Smith, associate professor of African-American studies and theater, has directed more than 20 plays at Oberlin and in the Cleveland area, and been engaged in other theater work nationally. For the 1998-99 season she received two awards from the Karamu Actors' Guild--Best Director for her staging of August Wilson's Jitney, and Director of the Year. Crossroads Dancing, by Irish-American playwright Margaret Lynch, has its world premiere on January 7 at Dobama Theatre, 1846 Coventry Road in Cleveland Heights. The production is presented in affiliation with the Cleveland Playhouse's Next Stage Festival. The play runs through January 29. Ticket information is available at 216-932-6838. August Wilson's Seven Guitars, directed by Jackson Smith, opens Thursday, February 17, and runs through March at the Karamu Performing Arts Theatre, 2355 East 89th Street in Cleveland. Tony Sias, an actor-in-residence at Oberlin during the 1995-96 season, is assisting Jackson Smith in the production. Ticket information is available at 216-795-7077. |
