Garry Wills Kicks Off This Year's Convocations Examining the Future of the United States

By Marci Janas

AUGUST 25, 1999--Author Garry Wills is the first of six speakers scheduled on Oberlin's convocation series for the 1999-2000 academic year. He speaks September 2. The title of his talk is "The Future of the United States."

Over the year, Oberlin will focus attention on American society as the College hosts distinguished speakers--nationally respected intellectuals from a broad political and social spectrum--all of whom will explore the theme of the future of the United States.

Wills joins Richard Haass (October 27); Stephen Carter, Amy Gutmann, and Michael Sandel (November 11); Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (February 10); and James Keller (March 7) in the current schedule. Additional lecturers announced during the year will augment the series.

All the lectures--free and open to the public--begin at 8 P.M. in Finney Chapel.

The Finney Lecture and Student Assemblies committees sponsor the 1999-2000 convocations with support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Office of the President of Oberlin College.
