Elaine Amacker Bridges '59 brought the music of the Oberlin conservatory to her hometown of San Angelo, Texas. Bridges, who was president of the San Angelo Symphony Board of Directors from 1996 to 1998 and is an active music advocate, funded and organized several visits by Oberlin conservatory students, professors, and alumni to San Angelo as guests of the San Angelo Symphony Board. During Winter Term, 1998, two conservatory ensembles--the Prometheus Wind Quintet and the Miro String Quartet--spent week-long residencies in San Angelo, accompanied by Assistant Professor of Conducting Tim Weiss. It was the second visit for Weiss and the Miro. These musical ambassadors visited schools, gave free public concerts, and performed in a benefit concert with the San Angelo Chamber Orchestra. Bridges also arranged concert appearances for violinist Lisa Kim '96 and pianist Gregg Punswick '96. And, thanks to her good offices, a quartet of Oberlin singers performed during their spring break with the San Angelo Symphony as part of its regular 1997-98 season. As for her own musicality, Bridges has sung with the Denver Cathedral Singers, a capella groups at the University of Texas, the Midland Texas Symphony Chorale, and with numerous churches. The composer George Lynn once wrote a song cycle for her that premiered at Loretta Heights College in Denver. Bridges is one of Oberlin's earliest double-degree students, earning a bachelor of arts degree in music and a bachelor of music degree in music education. She holds the master of music degree in music education and general psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. She has been a class agent since 1984 and has served on many reunion-gift and planning committees. She served a three-year term on the Trustee Search Committee, and has recently begun her second three-year term on the Conservatory Committee. Bridges, a self-employed rancher, has two grown daughters. The Alumni Medal is awarded in recognition of outstanding and sustained service to Oberlin College and its extended community. Alumni Association president Peter Kirsch will present her for the award. |
