NPR Correspondent Robert Krulwich ’69 Receives Webby Award

National Public Radio correspondent Robert Krulwich ’69, co-host of the popular Radio Lab series, has won a Webby Award for his original web cartoon series exploring carbon as the heart of global warming.

Krulwich received the honor for best use of animation in online film and video for the five-part series titled Global Warming: It’s All About Carbon. The cartoons provide a scientific explanation for how carbon —the central element of life—is the most powerful force contributing to global warming. The series characterizes carbon as a quirky male atom that bonds with two female companions to make CO2. It begins by explaining what carbon is and why it’s necessary, and ends by asking what can be done to eliminate the harmful effects of CO2. Krulwich and animator Odd Todd provide a clever and engaging picture of what carbon is, how humans produce it, and what can be done to prevent climate change.

An award-winning journalist, Krulwich reports on the intersections of science and technology with culture, politics, and religion. He co-hosts the popular NPR series Radio Lab with Jad Abumrad ’95. The animated carbon series is part of NPR and National Geographic’s yearlong multimedia series, Climate Connections: How Climate Shapes People and How People Shape Climate.

The Webby Award winners are chosen by members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. Now in its 12th year, the international award honors excellence in interactive design, creativity, usability and functionality on the Internet.
