Oliver Knussen will conduct the Cleveland Orchestra in Finney
Chapel Friday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. in a program that includes Magnus
Lindberg's Concerto for Orchestra, which will have received
its United States premiere the previous evening in Severance Hall.
Oberlin audiences will be hearing the Orchestra perform other works
new to its repertoire as well. Knussen's own work, Violin
Concerto, will have had its Cleveland Orchestra debut the previous
evening, along with Igor Stravinsky's transcriptions of Frederic
Chopin's Nocturne in A-flat, Op. 32, No. 2, and Valse
brilliante, Op. 18. Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnole rounds out
the program.
The Times of London calls Knussen "a composer
at the height of his power." When
he celebrated his 50th birthday in 2002, he was feted with three retrospective
concerts in London and special concerts in Cleveland and Amsterdam, confirming
his position at the forefront of the international contemporary music scene.
His music occupies a respected and regularly revisited place in concert and opera
programs worldwide. As an acclaimed and much-invited conductor, the force of
his presence and influence on contemporary music has been felt in many parts
of the world.
William Preucil, concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra since
1994, is featured in Knussen's Violin Concerto.
Reserved-seat tickets are still available for the concert, which
is part of Oberlin's
Artist Recital Series. Student tickets are $10; tickets for Oberlin College faculty,
staff, alumni, area educators, and senior citizens are $22; all others are $26.
