OCTOBER 18, 2002--Sara Hallberg, curator of education at the Allen Memorial Art Museum (AMAM), and a group of student docents recently hosted a kid-friendly program at the AMAM that revolves around the museum's collection of modern art. For three Saturdays in a row, participants in the Kidzhibit program explored paintings by Monet, Cross, Picasso, and Gorky, creating their own interpretations of these works for the museum's Community Day Halloween Celebration.

"We looked at these particular artists to explore the ideas behind Impressionism, Pointilism, Cubism, and Expressionism," Hallberg says. "Each child used these ideas to create an original painting, which we will turn into Halloween ghosts and pumpkins to display at the museum this coming Saturday."

The AMAM's Community Day Celebration will take place October 20, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. The Halloween-themed event is free and open to the public, and will include craft activities, ghost stories, book giveaways, and a raffle. Kidzhibit participants will be on hand to display their artwork, and student docents will provide free tours of the museum.
