JANUARY 9, 2002--According to the Center for Academic Integrity, 72 percent of high school students have admitted to serious cheating on written assignments and over half have admitted they have engaged in some level of plagiarism using the Internet. Students' misconceptions about what constitutes plagiarism and ways to prevent it are among a number of varied topics to be covered in a workshop presented Thursday, January 10, by the Oberlin College Library. "Preventing, Detecting, and Dealing With Plagiarism" is the title of the workshop which will offer faculty members the opportunity to share concerns and insights with colleagues in a three-hour session today beginning at 10:00 A.M. in Mudd 443. Reflections on plagiarism from a liberal arts perspective will be presented by Suzanne Gay, associate professor and chair of East Asian Studies, and reference librarians Jessica Grim and Cynthia Comer will give an overview of current national scene, e.g., full-text sources online, term paper mills and recent high-profile media cases. Professor of Classics James Helm will discuss the revision of Oberlin's Honor Code and juniors Joseph Andriano and Rebecca Castellano, members of the Oberlin Student Honor Committee, will detail how the group functions and explain what faculty should know about working with its members. Nicolette Love, associate dean of international students, will explore the implications of international students' differing cultures and customs, and Patty deWinstanley, associate professor of psychology, will present writing assignment designs and teaching strategies for heading off problems. The three-hour program also will include small group discussions of pedagogical issues plus descriptions of campus resources, recommended readings and web sites relating to plagiarism. For more information about the workshop, contact reference librarian Megan Mitchell by e-mail or by telephone at 440-775-8285 x270. |
