AUGUST 30, 2002--Stablehorse, an East-coast bluegrass band, will make an appearance at the Cat-in-the-Cream Coffeehouse Sunday at 9:00 P.M. The band's free, public performance is part of Orientation week.

This won't be the band's first time on campus; in fact, Chris Eldridge '04, the band's lead guitarist, is a student at the Conservatory. Zachariah Hickman '01, the group's bassist, also attended Oberlin, graduating with degrees in jazz double bass and English literature.

"The first time I performed at Oberlin was during Orientation my freshman year," says Hickman. "So for me, it's exciting to come back and give a full-fledged performance during Orientation week."

Hickman currently lives and performs full-time in Boston. He plays with local bluegrass and jazz bands, and singer-songwriters. Since moving to Boston, he has toured extensively with several bands, including Stablehorse, and has been a featured performer on several CDs.

Eldridge's father, Ben Eldridge, is a banjo player with the legendary bluegrass band Seldom Scene. During the summer months, Chris Eldridge tours with the band as lead guitarist. He also has been featured on the cover of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine.

The group also includes banjo player Chris Pandolfi, who is the only banjo player ever to be admitted to Boston's Berklee School of Music. Andy Hall, a member of the Harley Allen Band (which was featured on the soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou?), rounds out the Stablehorse line up on lead vocals and the dobro.

More information about Orientation activities is available online.
