The Oberlin College Department of Religion will celebrate 50 years of teaching religion September 20-22. The celebration will begin with an inaugural lecture by Gordon "Mike" Michalson. Michalson, who taught Modern Religious Thought in the West from 1977-92 at Oberlin, has published three books on theological issues in the work of Immanuel Kant, including his most recent work, Kant and the Problem of God (Blackwell Publishers, 1999). Michalson, who received his Ph.D. from Princeton University and who served as the chairman of Oberlin's Religion Department from 1989-1992, was appointed Interim President of Florida's New College in July 2001. He will speak on Kant's use of scripture Thursday, September 20, at 4:30 P.M. in King 306. In addition to Michalson's lecture, the evening will include a free panel discussion in King 106 at 8:00 P.M. The panel, "Challenges of Teaching Religion in a Liberal Arts College in the Twenty-First Century," will be led by Grover Zinn, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Danforth Professor of Religion. The other panelists will include James Dobbins, professor of religion; David Kamitsuka, associate professor of religion; A.G. Miller, associate professor of religion; and Abe Socher, an instructor in religion. |
