Faculty and Staff Notes
for the Week of October 1

Jack Glazier, professor of anthropology, has co-authored the first book in a series published by the Michigan State University Press on Michigan's ethnic groups. Each volume of the series is devoted to a different ethnic group in the state; six volumes have already appeared. Glazier's volume, co-authored with Arthur W. Helweg, has been recommended for the "Read Michigan A-list" and is appearing in many secondary school and college libraries across the state of Michigan.

Challenge, The Magazine of Economic Affairs, has published Robert Piron's paper, "They Have the World on a Queue," in the September/October 2001 issue. In the article, Piron (a professor of economics) argues that editors of economics journals behave precisely as economic theory would predict. By virtue of the universal practice of such journals in accepting a paper for review if and only if it is not sent simultaneously to other journals, editors behave as "monopsonists" (single buyers of a product) as opposed to "competitors" (such as law journal editors who routinely allow simultaneous submission). This inevitably leads to inefficiencies generated by long lags between submission and publication, as contrasted to the rather short lags of the law journals. Not content to leave it at that, Piron also suggests a number of reforms to shorten the lags and protect non-tenured faculty by giving them preferences on the publication queue.

Athena Tacha, emeritus professor of art, will present a show of new sculptures and drawings at The Foundation for Hellenic Culture, 7 W. 57th St., in New York, New York, October 12 through November 15.
