Memorial Service for Emma Howell

A memorial service and celebration of the life of Emma Howell (1981-2001) will be held on Saturday, October 6, at 7:00 P.M. beginning in Fairchild Chapel and ending in The Cat in the Cream Coffeehouse. The memorial service is being put together by a group of her friends and faculty in the Creative Writing Program.

Emma was an Oberlin student, class of 2003, who died in a swimming accident in June, just before returning home from a semester of study at Federal University in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. She was a double major, in creative writing and comparative literature, who spoke fluent Spanish and Portuguese and who was semi-fluent in French and Russian. A poet of great promise and serious commitment, she had published poems in literary magazines even before she came to Oberlin. Her family, friends, and acquaintances remember her as a unique and generous presence in their lives.

The service in Fairchild Chapel will continue as a candlelight procession to The Cat in the Cream Coffeehouse, where everyone--friends, family, classmates, and acquaintances--is invited to share memories, poems, stories, music, dance and other tributes to Emma's life. The evening will end with an informal time for sharing memories and food. Food and beverages will be provided, but if you would like to bring either as a way of remembering Emma, you may leave them in The Cat and the Cream from 5:45 P.M. on.

Earlier in the day (at 3:00 P.M.) student poets who knew Emma will be presenting a formal reading of her poems in Rice Lounge. Everyone is invited to attend this event, as well as the memorial service and celebration.

The people presenting this program are also pleased to announce that a prize has been established in Emma's honor to recognize a student poet. Contributions may be delivered or mailed to the Development Office, Bosworth 102, or brought to the memorial service. Checks should be made out to Oberlin College, with a note indicating that the contribution is for the Emma Howell Poetry Prize Fund.
